Reminded me of my privilege and made me incredibly appreciative of my mother. Four stars assumes that conciencix reader also takes into account the controversy and reads both sides in an unbiased manner, as the book is currently taught in most schools and universities, it would deserve two.

This story of Rigoberta is inspiring and enlightening. This is the kind of book they should make everyone read. Its about an unsung hero at least in the eyes of the world. We, white upperclass latinos, don't know much about the plight of the the Indians. In fact, we are kept from this information, systematically. The information is out there, but you need to find it.

While the story of Rigoberta Menchú is a horrifying example of what can happen under an oppressive dictatorship, the inaccuracies, half-truths, and distortions diminish the impact that the book would otherwise have. Nevertheless, it is an important book for any scholar of Latin America, women's rights, or dictatorships. I love how the author wrote it as a narrative in Rigoberta Menchú's voice rather than a biography. Make sure to read the introduction as the author gives an explanation as to why she has the book laid out as it is. It really feels like an open, heart-to-heart conversation with this native Guatemalan woman, and if you're bilingual, I recommend the Spanish version which I believe gives you an even deeper look into the Guatemalan way of life.

Decidí leer este libro sin entrar en la controversia que rodea este libro y estoy contenta con esta decisión porque aunque estoy segura que hay inexactitudes en la historia, el tema central, la de la represión y discriminación lleva una importancia indudable. Además, las descripciones de la cultura indigena maya y sus costumbres conmueven el lector porque recibimos una idea de cómo viven esas comunidades tan aisladas. Contiene partes interesantes como los rituales de adolescencia pero me aburran mucho las oraciones repetidas y los párrafos sin fin. ¿Como es que ella puede decir los antepasados le dijeron de no contar los secretos y en el mismo capítulo ella cuenta en muchos detalles los rituales de casamiento? Si estás estudiando las culturas indígenas en meso América, podría tener información de primera mano para utilizar pero tienes que leer mucho para encontrarla. No recomiendo hacerlo.

It took me a long time to read this book. One of the reasons is that this is a paper book, and I find it is much easier to read a digital when reading in a foreign language (easier to review notes, easier to do word lookups in the dictionary). For a gringa, this was a great introduction to some of the history and issues of the indigenous people in Guatemala - as well as great for learning Spanish. whether burgos ghost wrote it or not, this book is groundbreaking. how else would the world really even know (or care for that matter!) about the genocide that takes place in latin america, and moreso, that is unaccounted for in the first world. rigoberta is by far and away an inspiration to the field of post-colonial studies, whether you consider her problematic or a nobel piece prize winning inspiration.

Verdaderamente un libro esencial para captar el problema del gobierno de ríos mont. Es una historia que todos deben saberlo para no repetir esta etapa trágica que paso Guatemala en las dictaduras de los peores egoístas-de por si vemos como han sufrido las indígenas. Y como se pueden inspirar que a través de todas estas horrendas experiencias rigoberta salió adelante y gano el premio Nobel de paz. Una mujer santa- esperamos todos ser tan fuertes!

This book describes the living conditions of the indigenous people of Guatemala, their struggle to better those conditions, the obstacles they face (kidnappings, murders, torture). It is also the story of Rigoberta Menchu and her family, most of which is murdered in the struggle for equality. An inspiring and eye-opening story.

I really really loved this book. I read it for a Spanish literature class my last semester in college, and it was one of my favorite books that semester. It was definitely hard to read at times - her life was no piece of cake - but my favorite parts were the chapters in which she described the customs of her culture. Perhaps I am more interested in anthropology than I thought!
a good book because there was no other voice speaking for the Guatemalan's at the time...she was revolutionary and won the Nobel Peace Prize because of it. Overall not a very good book though...she repeats herself time and again throughout the book so it reads long and slow.

Of course I read this in English, but the edition doesn't appear here. This is a first person account of peasant activism during Guatemala's civil war.
Goosebumps, gave a feeling an Indian Guatemalan was talking to me. Hard to understand the way she talks at the beginning but then you flow with it
