If he weren't such a good action writer, Rollins might make a dynamite climatologist. Each of his thrillers has featured as a central character an extreme environment, most recently the Arctic ice (Ice Hunt , 2003) and now the hot sands of Saudi Arabia. But while Rollins writes settings and scenes that sizzle, what's caught in the heat are usually familiar characters grappling with far-fetched threats, and so it is here. That one male lead is a danger-courting archeologist named Omaha Dunn seems less parodic than tired, and the novel's premise of a hoard of antimatter hidden in the legendary city of Ubar is almost as ridiculous as the idea that this cache has been guarded for millennia by an order of women who propagate without men, via parthenogenesis. Rollins writes less like Michael Crichton than Stan Lee. Most of his readers won't care, though, because there's just enough scientific gloss on the nonsense to make it palatable, and anyway, what they want, and what he delivers, is action, as Omaha and an American military agent, Painter, join forces with two Mideastern women, one a scientist, the other a billionaire, to locate the steadily destabilizing antimatter before it's snatched by a villainous cabal, or worse, blows up the planet. Sandstorm started out in London with a literal bang and ended with a storm of supposedly epic proportions in an ancient desert city. But by the time it did, I didn't care anymore. All I saw was a swirly world of sand, glass, and static electricity populated by cardboard characters. The good ones would probably survive and the bad ones wouldn't and so what. What happened in between was pedestrian and predictable thriller fare with too many guns and action and not enough thrill.

Well, if you're going to have insomnia, this is one heck of a book to have handy. It took me a long time to finish this book because I had so many irons in the fire towards the end of last year. I am so glad that I did pick it up now, because it turned out to be a very rewarding read.

This is the first of James Rollins's 'Sigma Force' novels. This is different than most of the books that are in my book list, quite different in some cases.
It's basically an action movie in book form, but it's a good one, like Indiana Jones style. And Rollins seems to know that it's that kind of adventure. One of the characters is referred to as 'Indiana Jones' occasionally. It's the kind of humor I like in books, the wink to the audience that everything is kind tounge in cheek.

I read & loved Map of Bones, Rollins most recent release, so I picked up this book thinking it would be just as good. I moved backwards to this predecessor because I had not heard of Rollins before. Mistake!

Here's the thing about James Rollins - his books are utterly predictable and he is just unable to create any type of suspense or intrigue. I've read multiple Rollins books and they are all pretty much the same. They are the epitome of the books that you see on endcaps at your local pharmacy or grocery store and that's about the type of reading level they are as well. Simply put, I love this guy's work. Less 'bromantic' than Clive Cussler and more accessible than Micheal Crichton, both of whom I do enjoy, his tales are just fun, adventurous, and often educational. I wanted to read the Sigma Force books in order, so it took me a while until I could track down the first in the series - and I wasn't disappointed.

3.5 stars. A fun, action packed thriller that reminded me of Indiana Jones meets Tom Clancy with some excellent 'fantastical' elements woven into the story as added flavor. I read this novel as it is the first of the SIGMA Force series and I thought the description of the group was interesting (think special forces made up of scientists). I look forward to reading more novels involving this group.

This is the second book by this author that I've read. There is one thing that I've noticed with these two books. They both have in common a super-fast pace. The action is never ending as the characters go from one event to the next with no time to breath. I liked the action. This author has a flair for this kind of constant motion. BUT......I think in this book, more character development would have been appreciated. And maybe more world building now that I'm focused on my wish list.

I have no idea where this author gets his ideas but he certainly can take the reader on a wild ride. This is the first book in the Sigma Force series and the third in the series that I have read. I still like The Doomsday Key: A Sigma Force Novel best (probably because I read it first and the plot had a little bit more plausibility). I'm not familiar with antimatter, buckyballs, and a lot of the other stuff in this novel, but loved the setting.

Much of what is in the blurb is what I was going to describe in this review so I will try to be brief. Aside from a couple of far fetched incidents during gunfights and wounds, most of the physics, chemistry, cities and tribes described in this story are factual. The last time I read this, it took me almost a week to get through it, and it felt like it was never going to end. This time, for some baffling reason, I sped through its nearly 600 pages in less than 48 hours. And the faster reading time definitely made it a more enjoyable read for me. Other than that, everything I said last time still stands.

This is our first introduction to Painter Crowe and the series by James Rollins. I like this author a lot. His background as a veterinarian has led him to be a thorough researcher and lends credibility to his worldbuilding and plots. His characters are more three-dimentional than one might expect in this genre. The good guys have bad points and serious issues and the bad guys all have valid reasons (at least to them) for doing what they're doing.

You know I loved it. I mean, come on. I love this series - all the action, all the excitement, characters that are not all exactly the same, doing the same rote risk battle war, all the good dudes & obvious bad dudes. Not these stories!

I know a lot of people like James Rollins' work and, to be honest the reviews indicated something that I would enjoy as an entertainment. However, I found the work flat, the dialogue stilted and the characters unbelievable (and pretty much interchangeable). I lasted to about a three quarters of the way through then decided that life was way too short to waste it reading this.
